“The Andean Star”

Oreotrochilus chimborazo

The Ecuadorian hillstar or Chimborazo hillstar is native to the Andes of Ecuador and extreme southern Colombia. Its main habitat type is high-altitude mountain grassland between 3.500 and 5.200 meters. The male is dark olive green, females are duller. Despite their open habitat, these hummingbirds are surprisingly inconspicuous. Often you only see him flying briskly and he's gone again before you can locate him. To protect from the weather, nests are often built in caves, on the walls of steep ravines, or in protective bushes. Nectar is a very important food for the Ecuadorian hillstar and their main source is the orange flowers of the Chuquiraga shrub. The IUCN has assessed the black-eared fairy as being of Least Concern.
